Thought to have been developed in the early 1900's by Edward Pulaski, a legendary Forest Service Ranger in Idaho.

It is said that in August, 1910 his presence saved the lives of 45 men during a difficult time in a disasterous wildfire. The tool that bears his name may have been a direct result of the disaster, as he saw the need for better firefighting tools.

Pulaski is credited with combining a traditional single bit axe blade on one end and a mattock blade for digging or grubbing on the other end.
 
  • Forged steel head. Made in USA.
  • Hand sharpened, single bit edge and mattock blade.
  • Body coated with red enamel and the cutting edges in clear lacquer to deter rust.
  • 36" Hickory or Fiberglass handle.
  • Traditional double bit shape. Eye section is dried to below 10% moisture content to minimize shrinkage and help prevent loosening.
3.75 lb Pulaski axe with 36" hickory or fiberglass handle. A traditional style bit axe blade on one end and a mattock blade for digging or grubbing on the other end. Used in a variety of settings including forestry and general landscaping.

Features:
  • Axe head is joined to the fiberglass handle with a strong resilient epoxy, forming a chemical and mechanical bond.
  • Axe head is hydraulically seated onto hickory handle and secured with a serrated aluminum wedge. The serrated shape improves bite and the aluminum material is strong, lightweight and does not change size with moisture content.
  • Heat treated working ends produce fine grain structure and RC 45-55 (Rockwell Hardness Value) for safety, edge holding and toughness.
  • The interior detail of the eye is tapered and allows for a strong mechanical bond.
  • Approximately 1/2" of the overall length of the handle is removed during assembly.

    Better than most

    Pulaski's are not readily available here is the western US which is weird because the design is so practical. My dad has had one for years but I could never find one until coming here. I've had this one about 18 months and have no complaints. The handle dried out in the first few months but a little sanding and a coat of linseed oil and it looks better than new. I use it for clearing brush and chopping roots out. So far have not had to really test the handle but have sharpened the blade twice. Only potential negative I see is the transition from the axe to the the digging side is twisted - as in the head was stamped out of flat stock and the digging side was then twisted to 90 degrees while hot. Seems like that could fail under a lot of stress.

    The tool is fine, just has the same features as most modern hand tools, heavy and clunky compared to older counterparts, obviously made by people who have never used one all day. My main complaint is that I ordered and paid for the included sheath for both and didn't get either.

    Handle Snapped on the 5th Day of Use

    I used the axe to clear Arundo Donax, to excellent effect. But on the fifth day the handle snapped off at the head as I pulled the tool from the cut. It snapped off so easily it reminded me of balsa wood.
