access from above is preferred because it allows one to take advantage of the force of gravity. Descenders are designed to regulate friction and control descent on a fixed rope. They also allow one to be positioned at certain points on the rope to perform work operations.

Standard Descenders do not have a self-braking system. The friction of the rope on the device determines the braking power. Descent is regulated by varying one's grip on the free end of the rope.
